Melendez won the Strikeforce Lightweight Championship by defeating Clay Guida in June 2006. He lost the title to Josh Thomson in July 2008 and won the Interim Strikeforce Lightweight Championship by beating Rodrigo Damm in April 2009. He defeated Thomson again in December 2009 to win and unify the Strikeforce Lightweight Championship. His latest fight was a loss against Eddie Alvarez in June 2015 to bring his MMA record to 22 – 5. In June 2015 Melendez tested positive for an illegal substance and was suspended for a year.
