Lippi represented Italy in their Under-23 team in 1971. After his playing career he became a manager and started managing the youth team Sampdoria from 1982 to 1985. He went on to manage Pontedera from 1985 to 1986, Siena from 1986 to 1987, Pistoiese from 1987 to 1988, Carrarese from 1988 to 1989, Cesena from 1989 to 1991, Lucchese from 1991 to 1992, Atalanta from 1992 to 1993, Napoli from 1993 to 1994, Juventus from 1994 to 1999, Internazionale from 1999 to 2000, Juventus again from 2001 to 2004, Italy from 2004 to 2006 and from 2008 to 2010, and Guangzhou Evergrande from 2012 to 2014. He has been named UEFA Club Coach of the Year, Serie A Coach of the Year, World Soccer Magazine World Manager of the Year, and was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame.
