Among other awards, he received the Freedom of the City of London award in 2013. Unfortunately, his career was not without its black marks. In 2003, Auchi was convicted of fraud for his involvement in a $504 million corruption scandal which centered around French oil company Elf Aquitaine. The scandal was described as “the biggest political and corporate sleaze scandal to hit a western democracy since the second world war”. Auchi was fined almost $3 million and given a suspended jail sentence.
