Over the years, Al Lerner sold furniture and invested earnings in Cleveland-area real estate. He bought control of Equitable Bancorp in 1981 and merged with Maryland National in 1989, spun off MBNA 1991 and eventually sold to Bank of America. Widow Norma Lerner now owns the professional football team the Cleveland Browns team, a purchase her late husband made in 1998, and a mega mansion in Ohio, complete with a swimming pool and pool house, gardens, putting green, a manmade lake, tennis court and an attached garage.
