She has won four individual National Poetry Slam championships and was featured in the documentary SlamNation in 1996. Smith has authored the books Life According to Motown, Big Towns, Big Talk, Close to Death, Teahouse of the Almighty, Blood Dazzler, Africans in America, Janna and the Kings, and Shoulda been Jimi Savannah. Smith won the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt Award in 2014. She has also won a Carl Sandburg Literary Award, National Poetry Series award, and the Distinguished Writing Award for Commentary from the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
